This day excursion is designed for those who wish to enjoy a different Rome, away from the more touristic places, but still worth seeing.
You will be greeted at the Port of Rome and will make your way to the Appian Way, one of the oldest sites in Rome. Here, you will walk on some of the original Roman paving stones that have survived until today.
Next is a visit to the Catacombs, a maze of underground Christian cemeteries dating to the 1st century, a unique experience to walk the eerie tunnels filled with empty tomb niches and beautiful frescoes.
Entrance to the Catacombs is Euros 8 per person.
Your next stop is the Park of the Aqueducts, where you will see one of the most impressive and well-constructed aqueduct built by the Romans, which supplied Rome with tons of water for centuries. You'll have time to walk along it, a chance not many visitors get.
After which, your driver will take you back through the city center, passing the magnificent Baths of Caracalla, 3rd century baths that could hold more than 1500 people at a time going on the Aventine hill, one of the seven hills of Rome to see one of the secrets of Rome (not the best kept secret :), the keyhole.
From here you will continue on to the other side of the Tiber, the most bohemian part of the city, as they say "where the true Romans live". Here you will visit the main square and one of the oldest and most beautiful medieval churches in the Rome, Santa Maria in Trastevere.
You'll end this day in Rome, at the top of the Janiculum Hill where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city before heading back to your ship in Civitavecchia.
